Pollock Season - Round 2

After a slow start the pollock boats are heading back out to scout for fish.  We sent out the Alaska Rose and the Morning Star, visible in the top photo.  The Bering Rose was heading back to the dock to await news from the fishing grounds from her sister ship and the cod boats will soon be switching to crab gear and heading out for the opilio season - it sounds like the ice pack is moving down from the north and the boats are making ice pretty heavy.

On land it was an absolutely gorgeous day today, sunny and 35 degrees.  The storms lend perspective to the weather out here, making you appreciate the fair days all the more!

So, what is a pollock and what does one do with it?

You inspire me.

Great shots as always Steve. Say, is the Bering Rose based out of Seattle? It looks very familiar to me.

Great photos Steve! Days like yesterday really make the blizzards seem not so bad...hahaha
There were about 20 sea otters frolicking around out at the spit last night...was way fun to watch...We think 2 of them were mating...woo hoo sea otter sex!

Suzassippi- pollack is a cheap fish used to make fish sticks, fast food fish sandwiches. I used to think cod was used for those items but it is now pollack- I like fish sticks and fish sandwiches so I guess I like cheap fish. I did try to buy some halibut the other day- they wanted $32 for 2 lbs- I passed- back to the fish sticks.

Janice: yes, cod is now the more elite fish and good luck finding true cod any more! Pollock is today what cod used to be some time ago. My, how fishing changes, eh?

And of course, Steve, brilliant photography. Are these from the DSLR?

Suzassippi, I'll post more about pollock some night - everyones comments are true, it is a salt water walleye, essentially. It is also used to make surimi, a protein paste that is manipulated to make lots of things - fake crab is probably the one folks are most familiar with; Elizabeth, the Bering Rose and the identical Alaska Rose do make appearances at our Seattle Office dock - the Being Rose spent the off season down there in dry dock and just got back up here a few weeks ago; Lauri, I don't know what to say - ya think they really were??; and BZ, those are actually from the point and shoot, still my first choice for hikes with the dog when the weather is poor because I can tuck it in my pocket.

Love the boat pics Steve! Nice to see "other" boats and learn about them too. Glad you had some nice weather. Oh, and I think pollock is used for the McDonalds fish sandwich. Correct me if I'm wrong.
