These are Harlequin ducks and there are probably 20 mated pairs of them in the river across the street. They mock me daily - I can stand in my bedroom and watch them, I can walk on the sidewalk and watch them, but if I cross the street and try to take a picture they take off. They are gorgeous - none of my pictures do them justice but check out
Google images to see them up close and feel my pain. I feel terrible making them fly off, so I stay on my side of the road and admire them from afar . . . . . . . . the fact they won't pose for a photo just makes me love them more.

Hello Steve! Isn't it simply human nature to want what we can't get ? The photo of them in mid-flight is beautiful!! You might want to consider adding a long lens to you camera. With you inate talent and the beauty around you, it might be worth it. Thanks for these little windows into the real Alaska. They are precious!!
Those are some mighty fine ducks you're admiring. I have to admit that i have kind of a crush on the wood ducks that we get around here. They are such nice lookin ducks or as Aubrey would say "quack, quacks". Love you!
I wonder if they know you are watching them from your window. At least you can watch them from afar and they don't fly off.
I can NEVER translate what I see into a photograph. You can. I'm sure there will be "that moment" you'll get the picture and have the Harlequin romance.
You're brilliant. Even from a distance, I can see the beauty that you try and convey.
Ya those birds just won't give it up.
